Nelson Mandela, South Africa's first black president and an icon for peace, celebrates his 90th birthday on Friday...Washington (ChattahBox) – Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first black president and an icon for peace, celebrates his 90th birthday on Friday.

Nelson Mandela has been honored and has received respect for everything that he has done in life.

Back in 1964, he was sentenced to life in prison for plotting to overthrow the government in South Africa. He spent 27 years in prison, coming out in February of 1990.

Since then, he was elected president of the African National Congress the next year, and in 1994, he became the first black president of South Africa.

He has been touted as one ofo the greatest figures of the 20th century by several people.

He also recently received a tribute concert at London’s Hyde Park, making the 20th anniversary of the Free Mandela event.

Mandela spoke at the concert, stating “Your voices carried across the water to inspire us in our prison cells far away. Tonight, we can stand before you free.”

“Our work is for freedom for all,” he stated.
