Commandos go after the Terrorists in Mumbai

November 27, 2008

Mumbai, India (ChattahBox) — Two groups of terrorists launched one of the biggest attacks on Mumbai, India’s financial capital. They entered Mumbai’s two posh hotels – the Taj Mahal Hotel and the Oberoi Hotels, and opened fire.

A crack team of 200 commandos flew from New Delhi to Mumbai on Thursday to take charge of the rescue operations. Sporadic gunshots can still be heard as the commandos have entered into hotels where the terrorists are barricaded. It is supposed that nearly 9 terrorists have been killed and at least 4-5 more are still present inside the Taj.

The terrorists entered the hotels and shot down three receptionists in the lobby area in an open fire. They captured the hotel’s reception area on the fifth floor and shot the receptionists there as well. They took hostages from the 19th floor. They separated American and British nationals from other based on the passports held by the guests in the hotels. Some of the guests were able to contact the media via their phones. “Till about 15 minutes ago, near my room, in the stairwell, there was lot of firing going on, automatic weapons,” says a guest. “The hotel management has done a very good job… They told us to turn the lights off, shut the curtains and stay inside and do not answer the door.”

The terrorists have asked for ransom via Singaporean and Malaysian consulates. Another group of terrorists has captured the Nariman House in Colaba in Mumbai. This area is densely populated with Israeli nationals. The terrorists still hold 7 people as hostages at the Nariman House.

More than 300 were wounded in the highly coordinated attacks Wednesday night by bands of gunmen who invaded the two five star hotels, a popular restaurant, a crowded train station, a Jewish center and at least five other sites, armed with assault rifles, hand grenades and explosives.

A previously unknown Islamic militant group claimed responsibility for the carnage, the latest in a series of nationwide terror attacks over the past three years that have dented India’s image as an industrious nation galloping toward prosperity.

World Leaders have condemned the attack. President-elect Barack Obama led the global condemnation of grenade and gun assault on India’s financial hub, Mumbai. It is one of the third major attack targeting foreigners in South Asian countries.
