Terrorists planned much higher body-count according to Indian official

November 29, 2008

MUMBAI, India (ChattahBox) — Police and soldiers continued their room-by-room sweep of the Taj Mahal Hotel late Saturday to make sure all trapped guests had been evacuated and no gunmen remained hidden. Indian authorities also were investigating whether some of the attackers may have gotten away, blending into Mumbai’s 18 million residents. Another top official at the news conference pointed to a connection with Pakistan. Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari pledged his country’s full cooperation with the investigation and vowed to take “the strictest action” if it is found the terrorists were based in Pakistan. An Indian television station showed photographs of a phone’s log that indicated calls had been placed to Jalalabad, Pakistan. A UK security source told CNN that officials were investigating why two bodies believed to be those of terrorists were found with British identification documents. He said another gunman was captured alive.

Investigators probing the attacks said they found cell phones and a global navigational device on an abandoned boat floating off the coast of Mumbai, CNN-IBN reported. Meanwhile an Indian official said the coordinated terrorist attacks that killed at least 183 people in nine sites across Mumbai this week could have been much worse. “We found bullets with them, hand grenades, bombs,” R.R. Patil, deputy chief minister of Maharashtra state, said at a news conference. “Based on our investigation, we believe they had planned to kill 5,000 people.” The gunmen were in their 20s and appeared well-trained, a member of the Indian navy’s commando unit said. Police say boats took the men to Mumbai’s waterfront near the Gateway of India monument, near the Taj hotel. Officials said the men had prepared for months, setting up “control rooms” in the two hotels. Indian authorities said no one had claimed responsibility, although a group calling itself Deccan Mujahideen said in e-mails to Indian news outlets that it was behind the attack.

Meanwhile, security forces at the Taj hotel, the site of the terrorists’ final stand, carried out a series of controlled explosions Saturday afternoon to defuse explosives they came across as they combed through the 565 rooms of the Victorian structure. Read more about those killed in the terror attacks. The hotel was secured Saturday morning. Minutes earlier, a fire — which Dutt said had been set by the terrorists as a diversionary tactic — swept through the ground floor of the 105-year-old building and coincided with an end to rifle fire. The blaze was quickly brought under control. An additional 300 people were wounded, including 23 foreigners, said Vandana Pawar, a Mumbai disaster management official. The official death toll does not include the at least 11 gunmen killed. The toll is expected to rise as authorities count the casualties inside the Taj Mahal Hotel, whose burned-out lobby was littered with shards of glass.

IF you step back and see the whole picture, it looks like the intensions are to create tension between Pak & India. Might be taliban / al queda wants to divert world attention for sometime.

I think world need to be more focus now on Afgan Pak border, which is actually gateway for taliban / al queda for their logistics

The Mumbai Mayhem for 59 hours had India at ransom. It served a very important purpose. While India was gaining accolades all around the world as the leader in recessive times, while the US economy and other world leaders were witnessing a meltdown, while there were worries on the foreheads of all business leaders, while the stock market had taken a 300% beating, it was then that the terrorist ttacks had to happen. It went on to show that despite the accolades we were still lacking in terms of the intelligence network to pre-empt such attacks, we were lacking in crisis infrastructure and we were lacking in political will to handle such a situation. While the famed Mumbai Police, the elite NSG and the Marine Commandos fought it out at all the three locations-the Taj, the Oberoi and the Nariman House- to salvage the pride of a resurgent India, the political bigwigs went into their hideouts. The recently “marathi manoos” theme major political players went into oblivion when the “Indian” NSG fought the terrorists notwithstanding that they were trying to salvage the pride of Maharashtra-Mumbai. The debate on Malegaon blasts and the cheap politicking thereafter also faded into the terror stricken nights. Sadly, the politicians have been badly exposed that they are misfits to lead a nation that the world claims would be the next gen superpower. It is therefore not surprising that the youth have turned a blind eye towards these khadi clad hypocrites who make opportunistic noises.

It is high time that we take the nation in our hands and not rely on the politicians to show us the way. Because if not all , most of the political establishment is indulging in personal wealth management, regional and divisive interests, red tapism, corruption and as far as I think these are not nation building measures. So I for one and as the President of the “Religion of youth” feel that it is high time we use our ballot to the effect that we have administrators of repute, with literacy levels to understand the future, and most importantly see that the literate youth and the middle class do not withdraw from the elections but vote for the well wishers of the country.

I salute, the Mumbai Police, the NSG and the Marine Commandos as well as the brave mumbaikars who rise above these petty politics to come together and salvage the pride of the nation that will be the world leader- India Tujhe Salaam.

Its really dissapointing the way Indian people are being played into the hands of their internal and foreign agencies Its about time we should start looking beyond what we are being fed through our television sets I hope our leaders are sensible enough to act maturely in this sensitive situation If india and Pakistan work together, against the interest of west we can do so much

Indian govt must be held accountable for this mayhem. Being tolerant towards the worst kind of terrorism is the most henious crime it has commited among others. It removed the anti terror law required as per the guideline of UN.This time too, its not telling the truth about the actual no of casualities. It is also not sure about the no of terrorists who may still be present in Mumbai. Its extremely dangerous approach. Foreigners must not visit Mumbai.
