Man Responsible For Rwanda Genocide Given Life

December 18, 2008

Africa (ChattahBox) – Theoneste Bagosora, former senior defense official, has been sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of instigating the Rwanda genocide 15 years ago. Bogosora, as well as two senior military officers, are the first to be convicted of organizing the genocide by the UN tribunal, raising hopes that further convictions will be issued.

This is yet another step in the right direction as far as making those who participated in and organized the genocide pay. Earlier this month Simon Bikindi, a well known African singer, was convicted of being involved and inciting hatred that led to further slaughter.

But these decisions far surpass Bikini’s conviction, as they allow history to recognize some of the men ultimately responsible for creating the conflict.

“The court ruled that Bagosora had the authority over the killers. It is the most important thing… There can never be genocide without planning,” Aloys Mutabingwa, representative to the ICTR told reporters.

Thirty-one men still stand to be tried for the horrific killings of the 1994 Rwanda genocide.
