Russia Chokes Off Gas Supplies To Europe

January 6, 2009

Ukraine (ChattahBox) – In a move that has been anticipated (and feared) for some time, Russia has cut it’s gas exports by two-thirds, according to a statement from Ukraine based gas company Naftogaz, creating concern of further tensions and cutbacks.

While the reports are so far uncomfirmed, a spokesman for Naftogaz spoke this morning, stating that Russia’s Gazprom had sent only 92 million cubic meters this morning, a significant reduction from the 221 yesterday, which was a further decreasing number to those sent last week, sparking accusations of a possible embargo.

The reduction came after a statement on Monday that Gazprom was intending to reduce the amount of gas shipped through Europe after the Ukraine stole 65.3 million cubic meters from it’s pipelines, an accusation that Naftogaz and it’s representatives strongly deny.

Several countries are already feeling the effects of this cutback, especially Romania, which has had more then 30% of their supply reduced.
