Iraqi shoe thrower to seek Swiss asylum

January 19, 2009

(ChattahBox) —  Iraqi journalist Muntadhar al-Zeidi who threw shoes at U.S. President George W. Bush is seeking political asylum in Switzerland.

Al-Zeidi is currently in an Iraqi jail awaiting trial on charges of assaulting a foreign leader for his Dec. 14 outburst at a news conference in Baghdad.

A Geneva-based lawyer Mauro Poggia, representing al-Zeidi said his clients life is in danger in Iraq.

Poggia said the journalist has been beaten and tortured in Iraqi detention.

Al-Zeidi, 30, had been due to face a trial last month on a charge of assaulting a foreign leader, but the court date was postponed after his defense filed a motion to reduce the charges to simply insulting Bush.

“He is in danger over there,” Poggia told the Associated Press in a telephone interview. “He’s also in danger in other Muslim countries because people who support his action could try to make him a martyr.”
