Man Charged With Child Cruelty In Muslim Ceremony

January 30, 2009

UK (ChattahBox) – A taxi driver living in the United Kingdom has been charged with child cruelty after he encouraged his son to participate in a Muslim ceremony that required the 10-year-old to beat himself with a device made of wood, chains, and blades.

The ceremony of zanjeer matam is a tradition right that requires participants to beat themselves with the object, and the father, who’s name has not been released, is adamant that it is done out of ‘love and devotion’, and never as an attempt to hurt his son.

The boy’s mother made the criminal complaint, saying that she had not wanted their child to take part in the ceremony, which is illegal in the UK.

The judge who handled the case gave the man a six month suspended sentence, 180 hour community service, and a $1,000 fine.

“Not only did you allow him to participate in the ceremony, in my judgment, you actively encouraged him,” Judge Nicholas Coleman told the man. “The boy’s injuries were slight but they could have been worse.”
This is the second man to be brought up on charges of child cruelty after a boy participated in the ceremony, and it is expected that there will be more.
