Pope Proves He’s Not The Answer in Fight on Aids

March 17, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Pope Benedict’s XVI recent comments stating condoms don’t stop the spread of Aids and that they actually increase the problem, set off a firestorm of criticism today from health professionals and organizations, who deal with the devastation, on a daily basis, that the Aids epidemic has waged on its population, including mothers and their children. The Pope made these statements on Tuesday, on the Papal plane as he embarked on the first day of a 7 day pilgrimage to the African countries of Cameroon and Angola. Written questions were submitted to the Pope in advance of the trip and he provided his answers to the reporters traveling with him during the flight.

Pope Benedict XVI went on to say that the Roman Catholic Church was at the forefront in the aids battle. Catholic dogma promotes abstinence and fidelity to stop the spread of Aids and other sexually transmitted disease. Condom use is viewed as contrary to the Church’s rejection of all means of artificial contraception. This was the first statement Pope Benedict made, during his four years as Pope, outright rejecting the use of condoms to stop the spread of Aids.

Timing is everything as they say, and in this instance, the Pope’s timing stinks. With over 22 million, men, women and children infected with Aids in poverty stricken regions of Africa, the only weapon available to combat the spread of this deadly disease is a condom.

When the Pope arrived in the dusty Capital City of Yaounde today, thousands of faithful lined the dirt roads under the scorching sun to get a glimpse of their Roman Catholic spiritual leader. Africa is one of the fastest growing regions for the Catholic faith. I have to wonder what these people thought upon hearing of the Pope’s statements today.

Condom use is a scientifically proven, safe and inexpensive method to combat the spread of Aids. In a region so ravaged with crushing poverty, human rights abuses and an Aids epidemic, these people need words of hope from their spiritual leader, not more despair and not condemnation.

Sue – You are a propaganda shill for multi-national latex manufacturing corporations.

Condoms are NOT 100% effective – Absitinence IS 100% effective.
    It’s No Contest.

You advocate condoms to allow sluttery and irresponsibility and avoidance of self-control. Your pathetic pandering to your fatalisitc world-view that people cannot behave rationally and control themselves is absolute rubbish.

To fight against the use of condoms is the fight against common sense. To the extent that people already engage in sexual activitices, condoms can hardly be seeen as exascerbating the problem. I think the real issue is to teach responsible sexual behavior. Preaching abstinence is an anachronism that’s out of touch with reality.
