Japan Deploys Missile Defense System in Anticipation of North Korea Missile Launch

March 27, 2009

(ChattahBox) — As widely reported North Korea has moved a multi-stage missile to a launch pad. Pyongyang says the launch has been set for some time between April 4 and 8. While Pyongyang has said the rocket will only carry a communications satellite, the United States, Japan and South Korea suspect it will be used to test a long-range Taepodong-2 intercontinental ballistic missile. As countries have raised their voices to protest (including Russia on Friday) North Korea has warned that any UN action against Pyongyang for a missile launch would lead to the breakdown of the six-party nuclear disarmament talks.

As tensions rise Japan has ordered two destroyers equipped with American-built Aegis anti-missile systems into the Sea of Japan, and said it would soon move Patriot land-to-air missiles to the country’s northern coast, over which the North Korean rocket is likely to fly. Japan has ordered its military on Friday to intercept any dangerous debris that may fall on its territory.  The first booster rocket is expected to fall into the Sea of Japan and the second into the Pacific Ocean, but a failed launch or accident could result in one of the stages of the rocket, or bits of it, falling on Japan and endangering lives and property.

However, the probability of a missile successfully hitting a moving target without a known trajectory, as in the case of debris, is very low. There are even doubts among missile experts about whether Japan’s anti-missile network can protect the country, in the event of a real missile attack.

U.S. ships are also being deployed to the Sea of Japan and are prepared to track a launch or more, if afforded.
