Large earthquake in Italy causes devastation

April 6, 2009

(ChattahBox) — A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake has struck the central Italian city of L’Aquila, killing at least 20 people and rising. Italy’s Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has declared a state of emergency after the massive earthquake struck about 60 miles north of Rome during the night. Between 10,000 and 15,000 buildings have been damaged and around 100,000 people fled their homes when the tremors started, fearing aftershocks. Phone and power lines remain down, and some bridges and roads have been closed as a precaution as the region was hit by a series of aftershocks. The quake came about five hours after another tremor of 4.6 magnitude was felt over a wide area farther north, around Ravenna in Italy‚Äôs Emilia-Romagna region. Split up by two major fault lines, Italy has gained a reputation as one of the most earthquake prone countries in Europe.
