Suspected Basque separatist leader arrested in France

April 19, 2009

(ChattahBox) — The suspected military leader of the Basque separatist group ETA and other members have been arrested in France, Spanish officials said Sunday.

Jurdan Martitegi was detained with two other suspected Eta members near Perpignan in a joint Franco-Spanish security operation. Hours later, six other ETA suspects were arrested in Spain. Martitegi, nicknamed “The Giant”, has been on the run since last July when Spanish police broke up ETA’s main attack unit known as the Vizcaya cell. It is believed to have been responsible for a series of bombings on police stations and government buildings.

The news comes just over a week since the arrest in Paris of another top Eta suspect, Ekaitz Sirvent Auzmendi.  Eta is blamed for the deaths of more than 800 people in its 40-year campaign for an independent Basque nation, and is listed as a terrorist group by the European Union and the United States.
