Wife of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi Seeks Divorce

May 3, 2009

(ChattahBox) — The second wife of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, says she wants to file for divorce, Italian newspapers reported Sunday. “I’d like to close the curtain on our married life,” Veronica Lario, 52, said in an interview with La Repubblica that was published Sunday. Lario a former B-movie actress met Berlusconi, 72, in 1980, whend he was a married. They were wed in a civil ceremony in 1990 after having three children. As in what goes around, comes around last week Lario wrote an open letter that criticized her husband for cavorting with much younger women. She also was incensed at news reports that her husband had attended the 18th birthday party in Naples of Noemi Letizia daughter of a business associate, who has posed for magazines semi-nude and has said in interviews that she calls the prime minister “daddy,” but not attended parties of his own children.
The conservative premier, in his third term in office is pretty full of himself anyway having compared himself to Jesus Christ and Napoleon, and proclaiming he is the world’s most popular leader. Earlier in the week, Ms. Lario complained to the ANSA news agency about reports that her husband’s coalition planned to nominate a slate of attractive, young women mostly former actresses and television personalities, for elections to the European Parliament. “What’s happening today (in Italy) behind a front of bodily curves and female beauty is grave,” she wrote, adding it offended all women and particularly those who had fought in the “front line” for women’s equality.

“Someone has written that this is just a diversion for an emperor,” Lario wrote. “I agree.”

Choosing candidates on the basis of their looks rather than of their political experience was “shamelessly trashy,” Ms. Lario said.
