“Best Job in the World” Gig Won: Six Months on Tropical Australian Island

May 6, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Thirty-four year old Ben Southall, a charity fundraiser from Petersfield, Hampshire, England, is a very happy man, after winning a contest promoted by Tourism Queensland, for the “best job in the world,” which involves working as a “caretaker” for beautiful Hamilton Island in Queensland for six months.

After a “realty show” style competition based on the “Survivor” series that drew 34,000 people from around the world to compete for the dream job, Southall won out with his superior snorkeling and swimming skills and his engaging personality.

Tourism Queensland chief Anthony Hayes, admits the promotion is a clever PR campaign to garner publicity for Australian tourism, which is taking a huge hit from the global recession, particularly the exotic locales of the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef, where Hamilton Island is situated. And it’s indeed a clever tourism promotion.

In addition to the publicity, surrounding the “dream job” contest, Ben Southall as the winner, will write daily blogs and produce video reports about his experiences exploring Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, further building on the media hype surrounding the global contest, and providing daily advertising for Tourism Queensland.

At just $150.000, which is Southall’s salary, Tourism Queensland is receiving a good deal for an advertising blitz that runs six months and at the same time; Mr. Southall is being paid a princely sum for just six months of blogging and snorkeling from a tropical vacation paradise.

In addition to his salary, Southall will be provided with a three-bedroom villa, a swimming pool and golf cart, which he plans to share with his Canadian girlfriend. Southall was chosen from 16 finalists who were flown to Hamilton Island for the final stage of competition. Finalists had to compete in various challenges, including blogging skills, snorkeling and swimming.

The official job description for his duties as caretaker of Hamilton Island reads: ” Explore the islands of the Great Barrier Reef, swim, snorkel, make friends with the locals and generally enjoy the tropical Queensland climate and lifestyle.”

Southall has already begun his blogging duties from his Hampshire, England home, breathlessly reporting on his preparations for his upcoming dream job in Queensland. His official duties on Hamilton Island begin on July 1, when he will begin his island adventure on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

Hamilton Island is developed solely for tourism, boasting numerous hotels, ocean front vacation villas, gourmet restaurants and water activities along the Great Barrier Reef. It’s part of the Whitsunday Islands chain off the east coast of Australia.

Tourism Queensland for its part is waiting by the phones, hoping to arrange vacation tours for the thousands of new tourists that are expected soon on Queensland’s shores, as a result of its promotion and Southall’s blogging efforts.
