White Tiger Kills Zookeeper In New Zealand

May 27, 2009

New Zealand (ChattahBox) – A zookeeper at the Zion Wildlife Gardens in Whangarei has been mauled to death, despite a second keeper’s efforts to rescue him. A group of eight overseas tourists looked on horrified as one of two white tigers in the enclosure attacked the man.

The zoo has come under scrutiny for possible abuse to the various lions and tigers that are kept there, though no official reports on the issue have been released.

But now, after zookeeper Dalu Mncube was killed by a Royal White Tiger – one of only 120 left in the world, during a routine check, the zoo is sure to come under investigation.

It will be the first real look into claims made by Lion Man reality television star Craig Busch, who was ousted from the wildlife conservatory after the relationship with his mother, who runs Zion Wildlife Garden, soured.

According to visitors to the park that witnessed the attack, two employees, including Mncube, entered the Tiger compound as guests watched. Immediately one of the two White Tigers kept there leaped onto Mncube, mauling him.

Though the other zookeeper and various staff tried to save him, the tiger refused to let go and the animal was finally shot and killed to remove the man.

The man died at the scene before the ambulance arrived at the park.
