Teenager Solves 300-Year-Old Math Problem In Sweden

May 28, 2009

Sweden (ChattahBox) – A 16-year-old High School student has managed to figure out a 300-year-old math problem that has been used as a challenge in the mathematical world for centuries.  Iraq-born Mohamed Altoumaimi found a formula to prove and simplify ‘Bernoulli numbers’, a sequence of calculations named after the 17th century Swiss mathematician Jacob Bernoulli.

Altoumaimi who moved with his family to Sweden six years ago, was at first met with skepticism when he presented his findings to  his teachers, but after explaining his calculations and findings, it became clear that he was on to something.  Altoumaimi also decided to contact a professor at Uppsala University in hopes of validating his work.

“Right away they wanted to take a look at all my calculations and the documents where I show that the formula really works,” he told Swedish paper ‘Dalarnis Tidningar‘.

His calculations have been confirmed as a solution, and he has become the youngest person ever to officially find an answer to the formula.
