Romanian Families Forced From Homes After Racist Attacks

June 17, 2009

Northern Ireland (ChattahBox) – A string of racially motivated attacks against Romanian families have caused 151 members of the Belfast community to flee their homes.

The attacks have been increasing over the last several months, finally causing the government to step in more forcefully after a group of people surrounded the homes of more than twenty families and threw bricks through their windows.

The 151 people who had originally gathered into one home in order to find safety in numbers were moved this week into a recreation center, where they are staying until something can be done about the violence.

“We need a collective effort to face down these criminals in society who are quite clearly intent on preying on vulnerable women and children,” Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness was quoted in the BBC.

While suspicions have moved towards various street gangs and paramilitary groups in the area, the government has denied this. They have released no names of those possibly held responsible.
