US Navy With Anti-Missile Assets, Tracking North Korean Ship

June 18, 2009

(ChattahBox)—The United States Navy has deployed ships and anti-missile assets to international waters in the Pacific to track a North Korean ship, suspected of carrying weapons in defiance of the newly imposed U.N. sanctions against the communist country.

The ship, named the Kang Nam left a North Korean port on Wednesday and has been referred to by military officials as a “subject of interest.”

Tensions with Pyongyang have increased in recent weeks as leader, Kim Jong-il has become increasingly unhinged and defiant, announcing his plans to continue to test-fire missiles in contravention of U.N. resolutions. Pyongyang launched its Taepodong-2, intercontinental ballistic missile in April.

This week Kim Jong-il even threatened to test-fire a long-range missile over Japan toward Hawaii between July 4 and July 8.

After North Korea’s May 25 nuclear test, the new U.N. sanctions were adopted, allowing the U.S. to search a ship with a flag country’s consent. Numerous short-range missiles were fired on the east coast soon after the May nuclear test. In response to the new U.N. sanctions, North Korea announced its plans to begin a uranium enrichment program.

Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Robert Gates is monitoring the volatile situation, saying “…we are in a good position, should it become necessary to protect American territory.”
