Report: Signal detected from Air France Airbus flight 447 black box

June 23, 2009

(ChattahBox) — It’s being reported that faint signals from the flight data recorders, or “black boxes”, of the Air France airliner that went down into the Atlantic on June 1st four hours after takeoff killing all 228 people on board have been located.

A research mini-submarine, called the Nautile, had dived to search for the flight recorders based on a “very weak signal,” according to French newspaper Le Monde.

Locator beacons, known as “pingers”, on the flight recorders send an electronic impulse every second for at least 30 days, which may mean there are only 8 days left to recover the black box. The signal can be heard up to 2 km (1.2 miles) away.

For over a week, search efforts for debris, bodies and the black boxes of flight 447 have focused on an area 1,350km off the Brazilian coastal city of Recife.

The remote location in the Atlantic as well as the depth of the ocean floor have made the search especially difficult as the wreckage could lie anywhere between a depth of 1 km (0.6 miles) and 4 km (2.5 miles).

Yesterday officials said that they had identified 11 of the 50 bodies so far recovered from the crash site off the coast of Brazil, by using dental records and fingerprints. Of those identified ten were Brazilian, although no names have been released.
