June 23, 2009

Pakistan (ChattahBox) – Qari Zainuddin, rival of Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud, has been assassinated in the city of Islamabad.

Zainuddin was a powerful rival leader, who was the main symbol of opposition against Mehsud, who is well known for being the mastermind behind a series of deadly suicide bombing which have takent he lives of many civilians in the region.

But Zainuddin’s death is more than the elimination of a political rival. It is a message to the rest of the country, military analyst Talat Masood told the New York Times.

“It tells people if you side with the government this is what will happen to you. It says the government can’t give you protection but the other side can.”

The blow against Pakistan’s anti-Taliban movement is a huge one, and one that is expected to be felt within all rival factions within the government and civilian rebel groups. Zainuddin’s death comes on the heels of an attempt at a mass rally again Mehsud earlier in the month.
