Yemen Jet with 153 Aboard Crashes in Indian Ocean

June 30, 2009

(ChattahBox) —  An Airbus A310-300 from Yemen with 153 people on board crashed in the Indian Ocean early Tuesday as it tried to land during heavy wind on the island nation of Comoros in the archipelago. Most of the passengers on the Yemenia Air Airbus 310 were believed to be Comoros residents returning from Paris. The plane had stopped off in the Yemeni capital, Sana’a, on the way to Moroni, the capital on the main island of the Comoros archipelago.  The Paris airports authority said 66 French nationals were aboard the plane, which was flying the final leg of a flight taking passengers from Paris and Marseille to Comoros via Yemen.  Rescue crews have spotted the wreckage, and there are a few bodies floating among a lot of debris, a Yemeni aviation official said. There is already early word that French aviation inspectors found a “number of faults” during a 2007 inspection of this plane.
