Lesbian Couples To Be Allowed To Put Both Names On Birth Certificate

September 1, 2009

UK (ChattahBox) – The British government has announced that lesbian couples that have a child through IVF will both be allowed to put their names on the birth certificate as the parents.

The move will allow both parties to claim legal responsibility and joint parentage on all children born within the relationship, a huge step in the right direction for gay couples.

“It’s fantastically good news,” Eve Carlile, who has two boys with her partner of 12 years, Rosalind Carlile.

“We didn’t conceive our children together, but we did conceive of them. Hopefully it will have a positive effect on society’s view of lesbian and gay people, because the government are basically saying that we’re OK, and perhaps people who are not gay will begin to think the same.”

The law is retroactive only to April of this year, and so couples who had children before will still be required to adopt in the case of the non-birthing mother.

However, with such an accepting law put into place, it is hoped that adoption in those cases will be easier.

Hopefully, this means that male couples, with one parent who provides sperm, will also be allowed to benefit from an expansion of this law.

It seems to be a step towards greater equal rights for gay couples in Britain. Maybe the US could take a leaf from their book?
