Taliban Suicide attack ‘kills Deputy Intelligence Chief in Afghanistan

September 2, 2009

(ChattahBox) — More grim news in Afghanistan.  A Taliban suicide bomber blew himself up outside a mosque in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday, killing the deputy head of Afghan intelligence and more than 20 other people, officials said.  Dr. Abdullah Laghmani, the deputy director of the National Directorate for Security, the country’s intelligence service, was killed as he left the main mosque in Mehterlam, the capital of the eastern province of Laghman.  The assassination, which  was carried out by a suicide bomber on foot underscored the Taliban’s increasing ability to carry off complex and targeted attacks. Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for Taliban forces in Afghanistan, said Dr. Laghmani was specifically targeted in the attack.  Tensions in Afghanistan are already high as the country counts the results of the Aug. 20 presidential election with multiple allegations of corruption, with President Hamid Karzai currently leading Abdullah Abdullah. In the latest move to counter the growing insurgency in Afghanistan, U.S. officials are planning to add as many as 14,000 combat troops without increasing the overall number of U.S. troops, by sending home support units and replacing them with “trigger-pullers.
