Newly appointed Iran Defense Minister wanted by Argentina for deadly bombing of Jewish center

September 3, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Highly controversial President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s choices for key Cabinet posts were approved by Iran’s conservative-dominated parliament Thursday, including endorsing the defense minister nominee who is wanted on Interpol terrorism charges for a deadly 1994 bombing of a Jewish cultural center.  Argentine prosecutors have charged Ahmad Vahidi in connection to the 1994 bombing of a Jewish charitable foundation in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people.  “Death to Israel!” the lawmakers chanted after Vahidi’s nomination was announced. “Death to Israel!”  Meanwhile the rest of the civilized world continues to attempt ‘diplomacy’ to stop Iran’s nuclear ambitions.  What’s wrong with this picture?

The embattled Ahmadinejad has faced opposition about some choices for his 21-seat Cabinet, but managed to win approval for all but three ministers, including the foreign, interior, intelligence ministries and Ahmad Vahidi as defense minister. Among some of the other controversial cabinet choices approved is a female health minister, Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi, who advocated gender segregation of the nation’s hospitals and Kamran Daneshjoo,  an Ahmadinejad loyalist who played a key role in overseeing Iran’s fraud-marred elections, as head of the ministry of higher education, despite lingering questions about the validity of his academic credentials.  Among those rejected were two of Ahmadinejad’s three female nominees and the proposed minister of energy.
