Chavez Announces Russian Aided Nuclear Program On Horizon

September 14, 2009

Venezuela (ChattahBox) – Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has announced that his country will begin a nuclear program, and that Russia will be helping then get started.

Prime Minister Vladamir Putin agreed to assisting with the program during talks in Moscow last week, where they discussed the fact that oil within the region would eventually be depleted, and a secondary source of energy would be needed.

Chavez has insisted the country will not be seeking the development of nuclear weapons.

“We’re not going to make an atomic bomb, so don’t bother us like with Iran. We’re going to develop nuclear energy with peaceful purposes,” Chavez, who is a close friend of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was quoted by Bloomberg.

The announcement has caused concern, especially given suspicious fund transfers that the UN believes Chavez may be sending Iran in order to assist in their nuclear development.
