Israel Expresses Anger Over UN War Crime Allegations

September 16, 2009

Israel (ChattahBox) – Israeli officials have expressed outrage over a report released yesterday by the UN, which states that they believe both Israeli soldiers and Palestinian militants committed war crimes during the most recent Gaza conflict.

According to the report, “Operation Cast Lead” was a disproportionate attack, with Israel not taking the necessary precautions to reduce civilian deaths.

But Israeli spokesman Mark Regev has called the allegations ‘ridiculous’, and has criticized the UN for suggesting a new investigation into possible war crime violations should be conducted.

“In the last six months, the investigations Israel has done into its troops’ behavior in the Gaza Strip is 1,000 times more serious than this investigation,” Mr Regev was quoted by the BBC.

Hamas has also criticized the report, denying allegations that they, too, had committed atrocities.

“The Palestinian people and the Palestinian resistance were in a position of self-defense and not of attack. One cannot compare the simple capabilities of the resistance with the great strength of the occupation,” Hamas official Ismail Haniya responded.
