Several Eqyptian-Americans Jailed In Illegal Adoption Cases

September 17, 2009

Egypt (ChattahBox) – Two couples have been arrested and sentenced to two years after they were found to be illegally adopting children to return to the United States.

The first couple were found to have paid for two infants, a boy and a girl, from an orphanage. They were caught attempting to pass them off as their biological children with fake birth certificates.

The second couple were not accused of paying any money for the baby girl they had attempted to adopt, but the documents they had for her were forged.

A third couple, who fled the country, were also found to have paid money for an infant.

The two couples currently in prison have both claimed that they turned to illegal measures because Egypt makes it impossible for Christian couples to adopt, as they follow by Islamic law. In Islamic law you are not allowed to give a child your last name, even after taking them into your home.

In addition to the couples a doctor, orphanage worker, and two other unnamed Egyptian citizens have been imprisoned, the first two for five years, the other two for two.

Both couples have attorneys appealing the sentence, but have spent the last several months in jail. They are expected to be releases in nine months on good behavior for time served.

The children have all been returned to the orphanages they were originally taken from.
