UN Measure To Create ‘Nuclear-Free World’ Passed At Security Summit

September 24, 2009

Global (ChattahBox) – A historic UN resolution has been passed that will seek for an nuclear-free world in what is a heavily backed U.S.-sponsored move against nuclear weaponry.

The move is hoped to encourage disarmament in a heavily armed world, and to decrease the spread of nuclear weaponry.

It all stems from past international proposals over the years, but brings them al together for the first time under a single document, which has been supported globally, including by Russia, China, and other nations.

“The historic resolution we just adopted enshrines our shared commitment to a goal of a world without nuclear weapons, and it brings Security Council agreement on a broad framework for action to reduce nuclear dangers as we work toward that goal,” Obama was quoted as saying once the unanimous vote was taken.

All nuclear weapons already in existence will also be subject to higher security, with a resolution to lock down all nuclear devices with the next four years.

While some believed that these new sanctions were meant specifically to deter nations like Iran and North Korea, President Obama, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown all stood together to denounce this assumption, stating that it was meant as a global promise.

“What I believe is that if we have the courage to affirm and impose sanctions on those who violate resolutions of the Security Council we will be lending credibility to our commitment to a world with fewer nuclear weapons and ultimately with no nuclear weapons,” Sarkozy said.

The resolution was put to vote at the first ever Security Council summit to be headed by an American president. The seat is rotating, and Obama was up to bring down the gavel to lead this month’s meeting.
