Three Set For Execution For Iranian Election Protests

October 10, 2009

Iran (ChattahBox) – Three people, who have been accused of having ties with anti-Islamic Republic groups that participated in the protests against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s re-election in June, have been given preliminary death sentences.

The first, Mohammad Reza Ali Zamani, is the only confirmed person to have been sentenced to death in the region.

Three others, referred to only as “MZ” and “AP” are accused of having ties with the Kingdom Assemblies of Iran, and an “NA” with the People’s Mujahideen, both groups that believe in an Iran away from Islamic law.

It is not clear if the “MZ” announced is Ali Zamani, or someone else.

Amnesty International has spoken out against the sentences, three of which are still pending a higher court’s approval.

There are still 200 protesters detained, hundreds more having been released since the protests that began on June 12 over alleged poll rigging.
