Top Al Qaeda Official Killed in Drone Attack in Pakistan

December 10, 2009

(ChattahBox) — A high-ranking al-Qaida operative was killed Thursday in an attack by an unmanned drone aircraft in northwest Pakistan, US officials told MSNBC’s Bob Windrem. But the high-ranking member is not Osama bin Laden, he says. This would be the first high-ranking member killed in almost a year, Windrem reports. At least four people were killed and four were injured in the Predator drone attack in an area of the South Waziristan province.Pakistan denied that the strike even took place.  But CBS News has also confirmed a Hellfire missile was fired from an unmanned Predator drone and likely killed a top al Qaeda official in Pakistan, though they also are sure the target was not Bin Laden nor  Ayman al-Zawahiri either. If it were a “number 3”, it would be the 6th killed or captured.  Officials said this latest attack was the result of stepped-up operations targeting al-Qaida leaders in recent weeks. The news comes a day after the US Air Force confirmed for the first time that it is flying a new stealth unmanned aircraft the RQ-170 Sentinel, known as the ‘Beast of Kandahar,’ drone spotted in photos and still shrouded in secrecy.
