Union calls for ill advised strike to shut British Airways down over holidays

December 15, 2009

(ChattahBox) – British Airways cabin crew and their Unite union have voted overwhelmingly in favor of a strike in a dispute over job cuts and changes to staff contracts.  The timing however is meant for maximum impact in throwing everyone’s travel plans into chaos, leaving many people stranded over the holidays as the strike is set to begin on 22 December and run until 2 January.  British Airways is now left scrambling to draw up contingency plans.
In a message to BA ticket-holders, BA’s chief executive Willie Walsh said he and his firm would do “everything we can” to help those planning to fly with them over that period.

He also urged Unite to return to the negotiating table.

“It is very sad that they are seeking to use the Christmas holiday plans and family reunions of hundreds of thousands of people to try to pursue their case,” he said.

“Unite must understand that there can be no return to the old, inefficient ways if we want to ensure long-term survival in the interests of our customers, shareholders and all our staff.”

Most are outraged by the timing of this strike and see it as a recipe for disaster. BA posted a $650m loss last year, and will see even more red ink this year. It also faces a massive pension deficit, and now with a strike during the 12 busiest days of the year, it sounds like Unite union has chosen a mutually assured destruction for BA and itself.
