Police find Gunman Who Killed Five in Finland Dead
December 31, 2009
Altogether three men and one woman were shot dead at the Sello shopping mall in Espoo, police spokesman Jurki Karlio said. One male victim, was said to be Stefan Soederstroem, head of Espoo police, who had been shot twice in the head. Hundreds of people were at the mall stocking up on food and drink for the New Year holiday at the Prisma supermarket, on the second floor of a mall when the gunman took out a 9mm pistol and started shooting.
Initially the gunman’s whereabouts were unclear and a manhunt was started. But the gunman identified by police as 43-year-old Ibrahim Shkupolli was found dead. Speculation is he turned the gun on himself. His ex-wife has also been found dead perhaps the first victim, in an apartment not far away in Espoo.
This is the latest of a series of shootings to send shockwaves through Finland. Lone gunmen killed multiple people in school shootings in Finland in 2007 and 2008, prompting calls for tougher gun laws.
