Vatican Accuses Italians of Racism: ‘Savage Hatred Towards Another Skin Color’
January 12, 2010
(ChattahBox)—- After Southern Italy was rocked with violent clashes between local residents and migrant farm workers from Africa over the weekend, the Holy See condemned Italians as racists. The Vatican’s official newspaper L’Osservatore Roman was appalled at the violence, saying it shows a “mute and savage hatred towards another skin color that we thought we had overcome.”
The violence began in the town of Rosarno in the southern Calabria region, when local Italians shot at the African workers with air rifles and pellet guns. The inflamed African farm workers responded by burning cars and shop windows. Once the local residents responded to the burning, a full blown riot broke out. Locals attacked the African workers with iron bars and tried to run them down with cars.
L’Osservatore Romano invoked the election of President Barack Obama, as a positive change but one that didn’t seem to have an impact on the locals in the town of Rosarno:
“The American example has been futile: Obama-mania has taken hold from politics to art, from style to language, but has not breached the gap in showing the value of bringing different races together,” the paper said.
