Iraq Claims Massive Terror Plot Foiled
January 13, 2010
(ChattahBox) – Iraqi forces seized a large cache of explosives and arrested suspected insurgents, likely foiling a wide-ranging plot of huge proportion intended to disrupt the forthcoming elections and send the country into chaos. Twenty five people were arrested, and at least four and up to ten of them were suicide car bombers, who were en route to blow up several government buildings and public places in Baghdad in the massive plot. The conspirators possessed 440 pounds of both TNT and C4, as well as 66 gallons of ammonium nitrate solution and 60 mortar shells. The ministries of defense, health and trade and public places such as markets were to be targeted Tuesday, and several politicians and tribal leaders were to be assassinated. Officials expect violence to spike as Iraq’s March 7 elections near and insurgents seek to spread chaos. The general elections in March will be the second since the ouster of Saddam Hussein in 2003 after a US-led invasion. Much of the capital was brought to a standstill as authorities conducted raids, with hundreds of checkpoints set up throughout the city, in measures not seen since the peak of violence in the country in 2006 and 2007.
