(ChattahBox)—Terror and mayhem reigned in the streets in the Pakistani cultural capital of Lahore on Friday, when two suicide bombers, just seconds apart, blew themselves up next to army vehicles in a busy shopping area. At least 45 people are dead, with 100 injured. This latest blast, marks the second suicide attack just this week in Lahore. On Monday, a suicide car bomber targeted military security offices, killing 15 people.
Police say the two bombers casually walked up to the army vehicles, as residents sat down to a meal, before the main Muslim weekly prayers began. The densely populated RA Bazaar area contains a mosque and many shops and cafes.
The anti-American Taliban and al-Qaida militants have been stepping up their attacks in Lahore, a city of 8 million, which is home to top military officials and intelligence.
Police official Chaudhry Mohammad Shafiq, told reporters, “There was an interval of 15 seconds between the two attacks. They were on foot,” he said. “Their target was army vehicles. Army personnel, were injured, some of them are in a serious condition.”
One eyewitness, Mohammad Nadeem told reporters that there was blood, destruction and smoke everywhere. “There were broken chairs and tables and other items lying everywhere on the ground,” he said. Other witnesses reported scenes of terrified blood-soaked residents crying, laying in the streets with missing limbs.
Police official Shafiq, boasted that police managed to retrieve the heads of both of the suicide attackers. “We have the heads of both the bombers,” he said.
Islamic militants have waged eight attacks in Lahore, just this past year alone, killing 155 people.
No group as yet, has come forward to claim responsibility for the latest suicide bombing.
