Irish Bishop Resigns Over Sex Abuse Allegations
March 24, 2010
Ireland (ChattahBox) – An Irish bishop has resigned amid the sex abuse scandal currently rocking the Catholic Church, a move that shows the power of the anger of Irish Catholics after the Pope blamed “secularization” for the abuse, ignoring the role of the Vatican in the cover ups.
Cloyne diocese Bishop John Magee says that he put in his resignation on March 9th, and that he has officially left the Church.
“I have been informed today that it has been accepted, and as I depart, I want to offer once again my sincere apologies to any person who has been abused by any priest of the Diocese of Cloyne during my time as bishop or at any time,” Magee said in an official statement.
“To those whom I have failed in any way, or through any omission of mine have made suffer, I beg forgiveness and pardon.”
He is one of five bishops who have resigned since the scandal began, but the Irish Cardinal, who has admitted to having knowledge of sex abuse allegations and withholding that information from police, has continued to refuse to step down.
