Navy Vessel Captures Pirates, Ship After Exchanging Fire

April 1, 2010

(ChattahBox)—The USS Nicholas, patrolling the waters of East Africa, came under fire by a pirate ship early Thursday. There is no report of the naval vessel sustaining damage. But that was not the case for the band of pirates.

The Navy frigate sunk the pirate’s skiff, took five pirates prisoner and confiscated their mother ship.

According to an Associated Press report:

“The U.S. Africa Command said the five pirates seized would remain in U.S. custody on board the frigate for time being. The Nicholas is home-ported in Norfolk, Va.”

The United States along with its partners, have increased patrols in international waters in the region to battle the growing threat posed by Somalian pirates.
