Family Jailed For Suspected Torture, Murder Of Man For Benefits
April 26, 2010
UK (ChattahBox) – A family from Bedfordshire, England has have been given lengthy sentences in the horrific ten-year torture and eventual murder of a man, which was described of a crime of pleasure for the family as much as one for profit.
The Watt family were said to have held Michael Gilbert for ten years, taking his benefit money and torturing him.
Gilbert was stabbed, shot, beaten, humiliated and badly abused over the decade he spent with the Watt family of monsters, and though he escaped several times, he was retrieved by the eldest son and forced to come back.
He was eventually murdered, his body dismembered at the joints and his torso found in January 2009. His head was found early this year.
According to court documents, 27-year-old James Watt first met Gilbert when they were 15 in a children’s home. The family unofficially “adopted” him a few years later, apparent code for causing constant torment and holding him against his will.
Today, they finally got what they deserved, with the following sentences:
- James Watt – Life in prison, to serve a minimum of 36 years.
- Natasha Oldfield, Watt’s girlfriend – Life in prison, to serve a minimum of 18 years.
- Nicola Roberts, girlfriend of Robert Watt – Life in prison, to serve a minimum of 15 years.
- Robert Watt – Eight years.
- Jennifer Smith-Davis, the mother – Ten years.
- Richard Watt – Six years.
“We’re very pleased that this has come to a successful conclusion,” Detective Chief Inspector Jon Humphries said of the verdict.
“I think the sentences accurately reflect the nature of the violence that was meted out over the course of the last 10 years. The words that stick in my mind from the judge are ‘grotesque’ and ‘depraved’ over the nature of the behaviour that led to Michael’s death.”
