Archbishop Of Vienna And Pope Contender Accuses Dean Of Abuse Cover Ups
May 11, 2010
Cardinal Angelo Sodano was the former Vatican of State, and is the current Dean of the College of Cardinals.
According to Schönborn, Sodano covered up sex abuse claims for years about his predecessor, Cardinal Hans Hermann Groer.
Sodano has in the past come forward and publicly said that all abuse claims were “petty gossip”, sparking outrage from those who claim to be victims of Groer and others.
Groer was first accused of sexual abuse by a former seminary student in 1995, who said the cardinal abused him for years in the 1970′s. He stepped down, but denied the claims and said that it was his age forcing him to leave his position. He passed away in 2003.
According to Schönborn, Sodano and other officials purposefully blocked an investigation into the matter, and let it die by the wayside with no restitution for the victim(s).
The accusations are serious ones that hit close to home to the top of the Vatican’s hierarchy.
Sodano is not only a close aide of the Pope, but he is one of those who decides who the next Pope will be.
Schönborn is one of those next in line for the position, and this now pits the Archbishop directly opposite the man who might decide his fate in the church.
