Pope Blames Abuse Scandal on ‘Sin Within’ the Church
May 11, 2010
(ChattahBox)—Pope Benedict XVI has now decided, that “petty gossip” is not to blame for the growing problem of pedophile priests and Vatican efforts to cover up the scandal. During a recent visit to the predominantly Catholic Country of Portugal, he blamed church sin for the sexual abuse scandal.
Pope Benedict and his supporters have come under increasing criticism and ridicule for desperately attempting to blame others for the church’s pedophile priest problem, including the media, Jews and gays. Now, for the first time, Benedict has turned inward to the Catholic Church itself:
“Today we see in a truly terrifying way that the greatest persecution of the Church does not come from outside enemies, but is born of sin within the Church,” said the Pope to reporters traveling on the papal plane.
Pope Benedict also spoke of the need for justice, finally recognizing the need for victims to see abusive priests held accountable for their odious crimes:
Church has “a very deep need” to acknowledge that it must do penance for its sins and “accept purification.” But at the same time, the criminal abusers of children must receive punishment, said the Pope.
And forgiveness can’t come at the expense of justice. He said the Church had a “profound need” to “learn forgiveness and also the necessity of justice,” stressing that “forgiveness does not replace justice.”
Pope Benedict plans to travel to the town of Fatima, where three shepherd children reported sightings of the Virgin Mary in 1917.
