The attacks killed dozens of people when two young women, one a 17-year-old wife to a dead insurgent, targeted the subway system of Moscow’s busy business district.
According to intelligence agents, there was a raid on a location believed to be harboring insurgents partially responsible for the attacks.
This led to a deadly armed resistance from the three, who were killed by police in the ensuring battle.
“To our great regret, we were unable to detain them alive because they put up fierce armed resistance and were killed,” Federal Security Service (FSB) agent Alexander Bortnikov said in a statement.
Officials in Russia have formerly said that any involved in the attacks, or any planned attacks in the future, will be “destroyed”.
