18 Killed, 52 Injured In Deadly Suicide Attack In Afghan Capital
May 18, 2010
Most of the victims were Afghan citizens, and six were NATO soldiers – five American, and one Canadian – who were working as peacekeepers in the region.
The attack occurred when a Taliban militant drove into the city with a van carrying more than 1,600 lbs. worth of explosives.
It is not known how he managed to get into the city with the tightened security, or how he happened to get all the way into the center of town with the car bomb.
“I witnessed the bomb this morning at around 0815,” an eyewitness, Obiadullah Saddiqyar, was quoted by the BBC.
“I saw many people dead and many injured who were taken to hospital. Among the dead there were lots of women and girls – I heard later that they were students going to university. I also saw one of my colleagues full of blood in the back of a police car, also being taken to hospital. This situation really made me cry for the bloodshed and the innocent people who were killed and injured.”
The attack was yet another example of the Taliban’s view of the expendable nature of innocent civilians, as they once again take the most casualties.
