‘Little Obama’ the Movie: ‘Story of a Boy’ in Indonesia
May 21, 2010
(ChattahBox)—Birther conspiracy theorists will be all over this. In honor of President Obama’s upcoming visit to Indonesia, his boyhood home for four-years, a filmmaker is premiering a movie about Obama’s childhood there. The film, entitled “Little Obama” depicts the President as a spirited boy with mad ping pong skills. And the 12-year-old actor playing the young Obama is a dead ringer for the young “Barry.”
Screenwriter and co-director Damien Dematra, based his movie on a fictionalized biography of Obama, “Obama Anak Menteng,” which he also wrote.
President Obama, lived in Jakarta with his mother and stepfather from the age of six to ten.
Dematra describes the film, as an inspirational tale about a boy who just happened to grow up to be the leader of the free world. But Dematra also insists his early years in Indonesia helped to shape Obama into the tolerant man he is today.
“It’s not about politics, it’s just the story of a boy,” he said. “It’s about his friendships, his hobbies, just a childhood story.”
The actor playing Obama, Hasan Faruq Ali has much in common with President Obama. He was born in New Mexico to a white mother and African American father and moved to Indonesia several years ago.
The filmmakers have hired two of Obama’s childhood friends, brothers Djanuadi and Yuniadi to lend some realism to Hasan’s portrayal of Obama. The one difference that can’t be coached away? Barack Obama was chubbier as a child than the young actor.
“Little Obama” will premier in Indonesia on June 17.
