Russian Gangs Target Miner Families For Compensation Money

May 24, 2010

Russia (ChattahBox) – Families of the Russian miners killed and missing in a recent collapse have been put under police protection after widows claimed they had been threatened by gangs wanting the compensation money they were given.

According to one widow of the Mezhdurechensk mine blast said that men came and threatened to hurt her children and burn her house down if she did not give them the government payment that was issued to her after the death of her husband. Several other reports of the same followed.

The local authorities have given each family of the ninety dead or missing men police protection.

However, the opposition to the current government has said this is a ploy, as much as protection, to keep an eye on the families and reduce the number of protests that show the unrest brewing in the Kemerovo region.
