Iranians to Provoke Israelis With Gaza Aid Ships
June 7, 2010
(ChattahBox)—The growing international tension with Israel’s use of force to defend its controversial three-year-long blockade of the Gaza Strip, is now about to reach dangerous new levels, as an Iranian aid group plans to test Israel’s resolve. The group Iranian Red Crescent Society announced plans to send two Gaza-bound ships, after gaining approval from Iran’s foreign ministry. These plans come on the heels of rhetoric from Iran’s government threatening to offer its elite Revolutionary Guards to escort aid flotillas to break through Israel’s naval blockade.
According to a report by AFP, Red Crescent is recruiting volunteers for its aid mission to Gaza:
“Red Crescent director for international affairs Abdolrauf Adibzadeh told the state IRNA news agency late on Sunday that the decision to send the ships was taken after a meeting with the foreign ministry.”
“One ship will carry donations made by the people and the other will carry relief workers. The ships will be sent to Gaza by end of this week,” Adibzadeh said.
Adibzadeh, said “based on a decision by the society,” the aid ships would not attempt to reach Gaza through an intermediary country, but instead would sail directly for the Israel blockade. This action is sure to provoke a response from Israel.
Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad have condemned Israel with angry rhetoric this past week calling for an end to Israel’s blockade, after the botched commando raid of a Turkish aid ship, which left nine civilians dead and dozens more wounded.
