Pope Seeks ‘Forgiveness’ for ‘Abuse of the Little Ones’
June 11, 2010
(ChattahBox)—Pope Benedict XVI has come a long way from his initial remarks blaming “petty gossip” for the stories linking him to the decades-long cover-up of pedophile priests. During a recent visit to Portugal, the Pope blamed the pedophile priest problem on “sin within” the church. Now, on Friday Pope Benedict, tactically acknowledging that the Catholic Church has been damaged by the sexual abuse scandal, begged for forgiveness during a Vatican City mass honoring the Roman Catholic Church’s Year for Priests.
The mass in St. Peter’s Square was attended by 15,000 priests. Pope Benedict sought forgiveness from God and the victims of pedophile priests:
“And so it happened that, in this very year of joy for the sacrament of the priesthood, the sins of priests came to light, particularly the abuse of the little ones,” Benedict said.
“We … insistently beg forgiveness from God and from the persons involved, while promising to do everything possible to ensure that such abuse will never occur again,” he said before the white-clad priests from around the world.
“In admitting men to priestly ministry and in their formation we will do everything we can to weigh the authenticity of their vocation and make every effort to accompany priests along their journey,” said Benedict.
But advocates for the victims of pedophile priests are not satisfied by Pope Benedict’s begging for forgiveness. They want to see a Vatican initiated “zero tolerance policy towards the sexual abuse of children by priests. And are demanding that all sexual predators be removed from the priesthood.
