Eight Dead, 72 Missing In Columbian Mine Explosion

June 17, 2010

Colombia (ChattahBox) – A mine explosion has led to the deaths of 8 workers, with 72 still trapped within.

The mine was in the city of Amaga, in the northwest region of the country.

The explosion occurred around 1 A.M., during a shift change, when it was much fuller than usual. A buildup of gas is believed to be the cause.

“This is very sad news. The information I have from the minister [of mining] is that they have retrieved eight bodies. This is very grave. And I give this news to Colombians with much pain,” President Alvara Uribe said.

Rescuers are currently working to get the remaining minors out.
