Inmate Killed Fellow Prisoner, Ate His Lung Fried, Authorities Say
June 22, 2010
France (ChattahBox) – In a bizarre (and disgusting) story, a court is hearing testimony of how a French inmate killed a fellow prisoner after an argument over a plugged toilet, and fried and ate his liver.
According to authorities, Nicolas Cocaign stabbed his cellmate several times before suffocating him with a plastic bag, then cut open his body and removed the liver.
After attempting to eat part of the lung raw, he used a makeshift stove in his cell to fry up the organ with onions, and ate it under the nose of the guards.
The incident left many calling for an investigation into the flaws of the French prison system, including an inquiry into how he was able to kill, mutilate, and then partially devour a man without alerting the guards of his block.
The incident occurred in 2007, and according to Cocaign, it was a gruesome call for help.
He claims he needed psychological help for mental conditions he had been diagnosed with for years, but that his calls for help were ignored.
“No one was listening to me. I made several appeals for help, saying I was a man capable of being dangerous. I took action, and then they took me seriously,” the heavily tattooed inmate told the court in a chilling testimony earlier this week.
The case has caused several shifts in the pay and regulation of Rouen prison, which was often overcrowded, with poor hygiene, sanitation, and ventilation.
Cocaign had been living in a 11-sq meter cell with two other men, and claimed that the victim plugged the toilet with toilet paper, leading to the initial fight.
Cocaign’s life story, published by RAW, is a depressing one.
His mother was a 21-year-old homeless woman, and she abandoned him as an infant. He was in state care until the age of three, and then adopted. He was put into therapy at the age of six, and allegedly raped at 13.
He was arrested at the age of 22, after a long history of mental illness, violent sexual compulsions, and criminal behavior. He was in and out of psych hospitals for many years prior to the arrest that led to the 2007 attack.
