Iran’s President Cavorts With Sorina 2 ‘Robot Man’

July 6, 2010

(ChattahBox)—Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was quite taken with the fetching Sorina 2, with its gleaming luminescent eyes and snow-white metal joints. Despite its feminine sounding name, Sorina 2 is a dude, according the the comical title of the article in the weekend edition of the Islamic Republic News Agency: “President unveils 2nd Iranian robot man.”

As pointed out by the blog BoingBoing, the IRNA with its hilariously bad English translations and very serious writing style, has offered up some entertaining news nuggets of late. (Which is a Godsend to bloggers facing slow news days.)

In any event, according to the report, 20 robot man engineers from Tehran University produced Sorina 2. And it “…can replace human being in carrying out sensitive tasks in different situations.”

My favorite line: “The robot man is modelled upon human being and can walk on.”

And apparently there was a Sorina 1, perhaps similarly unveiled to international hilarity in 2008.

“Sorina 2 with 12 degree of movement in feet, 8 degree of movement in hands and two degree of movement in head could carry out instructed programs.”

“Walking like human beings, synchronize movements of feet and hands are among the characteristics of Sorina 2.”

Very cool, but the accompanying photo is the best part of the story.

Looks like they took an Asimo and re-cased it in a bigger package.
