July 25, 2010
(ChattahBox)–A Taliban spokesman and Afghanistan provincial officials confirmed today that one of the two U.S. sailors who were reported missing on Friday, is dead. And the second sailor is injured and being held captive by the Taliban. U.S. military forces are reportedly searching for the sailors and are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to their return. It’s unknown why the two sailors decided to leave Kabul on Friday night in a civilian vehicle and drive to Logar province, where they were caught up in a firefight with Taliban insurgents.
Military officials would not offer details about the disappearance of the two sailors, but Adm. Mike Mullen acknowledged that leaving the base in a civilian vehicle and driving over an hour away to a remote province, was an “unusual circumstance.”
According to CNN, Zabiullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesman, said the insurgent group would meet soon to decide what demands, if any, they would make on U.S. forces for the sailors’ return
“Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the two Americans were driving in a civilian vehicle in the village of Dasht, in Charkh district. The Taliban wanted to take both men alive, but the firefight broke out, killing one of the Americans, Mujahid said. The other is alive and being held in a safe location, he said”
It was a violent weekend for American forces in Afghanistan. On Saturday, five U.S. soldiers were killed in bombings.
