Former UK PM Tony Blair Pledges Book Proceeds to Royal British Legion

August 16, 2010

UK (ChattahBox) – Former Prime Minister Tony Blair has announced that the profits from his new memoirs, which will recall his life and time in office, will go towards the Royal British Legion.

The Battle Back Challenge Centre will be finished with construction in 2012, and will offer a sports center for British troops returning from Afghanistan and Iraq.

“Tony Blair decided on leaving office that he would donate the proceeds of his memoirs to a charity for the Armed Forces as a way of marking the enormous sacrifice they make for the security of our people and the world. The Royal British Legion is just such a cause,” the Telegraph quoted a spokesperson as saying.

“In making this decision, Tony Blair recognises the courage and sacrifice the armed forces demonstrate day in, day out.”

Royal British Legion director Chris Simpkins said he was “delighted to accept this very generous donation”, which comes amidst continued controversy over Blair’s decision to include Britain in the ongoing wars.

Underlining that controversy is the recent interview with Saddam Hussein’s right hand man, Tariq Aziz, who accused Blair of working with Bush on starting the war in Iraq on behalf of Israel.
